Shaolin Retreats & Temple Training

What is included in a Shaolin retreat?

A typical Shaolin retreat includes daily Kung Fu and/or Qi Gong training, morning meditation, stretching, conditioning, cultural activities, temple or mountain visits, shared meals, and accommodation near the training hall or temple.

Do I need any prior Kung Fu or martial arts experience?

No. Shaolin Worldwide retreats are beginner-friendly. Masters adjust the training for:

  • Complete beginners with no experience
  • Intermediate practitioners from other styles
  • Advanced students who want deeper Shaolin forms or fighting applications
How physically demanding is Shaolin retreat training?

Expect a mix of stretching, stance work, forms, footwork, basic kicks, line drills, Qi Gong, and meditation. Training is challenging but adaptable—you’re encouraged to respect your limits while gradually building strength, flexibility, and stamina.

How long are the retreats and who can join?

Most programs range from 7–14 days, with options to extend into monthly training. Adults of all genders are welcome. Some retreats accept younger students when accompanied by a parent or guardian.

What should I pack for a Shaolin retreat in China?

We recommend:

  • Light, breathable training clothes (quick-dry if possible)
  • Flat, supportive training shoes or sneakers
  • Comfortable casual clothing for rest hours
  • Personal toiletries, any medications, and basic first aid
  • Notebook, pen, and a reusable water bottle
  • Power adapter and portable charger
Are meals and accommodation included in the retreat price?

Yes, unless otherwise stated, retreats include simple, nutritious meals (often with vegetarian options) and either shared or private rooms. Each retreat page on Shaolin Worldwide clearly lists what is included and what is not.

How do I travel to the retreat location?

Travel usually involves flying into a nearby city, then taking a high-speed train or local taxi/Didi to the school. Each retreat listing includes recommended airports, train stations, and step-by-step arrival instructions.

Online Zoom Classes & Courses

How do Shaolin Worldwide online Zoom classes work?

You register for a live course, receive Zoom links and reminders, and join at the scheduled time. The master demonstrates techniques, explains principles, and guides you through follow-along practice with time for questions.

What equipment or space do I need to start online training?

You only need a small, clear space where you can comfortably extend your arms and legs, a stable internet connection, and clothes you can move in. No special gear or weapons are required for beginners.

Are the classes suitable for beginners?

Yes. Many Shaolin Worldwide programs are designed specifically for beginners and people returning to training. Masters give variations for different levels so you can build a strong foundation at your own pace.

Will I receive recordings or replays if I can’t attend live?

Most courses provide limited-time replays or lifetime access to recordings, depending on the program. Each class page clearly states whether replays are included.

Can I join from any country or time zone?

Yes. Students join from all over the world. If the live time is difficult for your time zone, replays and on-demand courses allow you to train whenever works best for you.

Lineage & Schools

Choosing a Shaolin Master or Temple

How do I choose the right Shaolin master for me?

Consider the master’s:

  • Lineage and connection to the Shaolin tradition
  • Teaching style (strict, soft, technical, philosophical)
  • Focus area: forms, fighting, Qi Gong, weapons, meditation, kids, etc.
  • Experience teaching international students
  • Availability for long-term guidance and questions
What is the difference between a Shaolin monk and a disciple?

A Shaolin monk is ordained within the temple and lives according to monastic rules. A disciple is formally accepted into the lineage and trains under a master, but may live outside the temple or run an independent school. Both can be authentic carriers of the tradition.

Can I train inside the Shaolin Temple itself?

The main temple is a historic and religious site. Most long-term students train at affiliated or disciple-run schools located in the surrounding area. Shaolin Worldwide works with trusted schools connected to authentic lineages.

How do I know if a Shaolin school is authentic?

Look for clear lineage information, Chinese names with generation titles (Shi / Shifu + Yan / Heng / etc.), a consistent training program, and long-standing presence in the region. Avoid schools that only use the Shaolin name as marketing without any connection to the tradition.

Can Shaolin Worldwide help me find a school or long-term program?

Yes. Shaolin Worldwide collaborates with multiple masters and schools. You can explore the retreats page and contact us if you need personal guidance in choosing a location that matches your goals, budget, and time frame.

Shaolin Philosophy

Chan · Wu · Yi Explained

What does “Chan · Wu · Yi” mean in Shaolin culture?

Chan (禪) is Zen meditation and wisdom, Wu (武) is martial practice and protection, and Yi (醫) is medicine and healing. Together they describe the full Shaolin path: calming the mind, training the body, and caring for health.

What is Shaolin Chan (Zen) meditation like?

Shaolin meditation uses simple postures (sitting or standing), breathing, and awareness to observe thoughts and emotions without clinging. The focus is on direct experience—less theory, more practice. Even a few minutes a day can bring more clarity, patience, and inner strength.

What is Shaolin Qi Gong and how is it different from Kung Fu?

Qi Gong focuses on breath, posture, and gentle movement to build internal energy, organ health, and calmness. Kung Fu emphasizes martial techniques, forms, and conditioning. In Shaolin training, they support each other: Qi Gong nourishes; Kung Fu expresses.

Do Shaolin masters teach Tai Chi as well?

Some Shaolin schools also teach Tai Chi and related internal arts. While Tai Chi has Daoist roots, its slow, flowing movements complement Shaolin Kung Fu and help with balance, relaxation, and long-term joint health.

What is Shaolin medicine (Yi) and Dit Da?

Shaolin medicine combines herbal formulas, trauma care, massage, acupressure, and Qi Gong for recovery and injury prevention. Dit Da refers to “fall-hit” medicine—traditional methods for treating bruises, sprains, and training-related injuries.

Daily Training

Kung Fu, Forms & Practice Routine

How often should I practice Shaolin Kung Fu or Qi Gong?

Consistency beats intensity. Many students start with 10–20 minutes daily, then build up as their body adapts. For deeper progress, combine short daily sessions with longer weekly training blocks.

How long does it take to learn a basic Shaolin form?

A simple beginner form can be learned in a few weeks of focused practice. Refining timing, power, and spirit can take months or years. Shaolin is less about collecting many forms and more about understanding a few forms deeply.

Why is the staff called the “father of all weapons” in Shaolin?

The staff is considered the foundation for other weapons because it teaches core principles of distance, footwork, angles, and body coordination. Once you understand staff, it becomes easier to transfer those skills to spear, sword, and other traditional weapons.

Can I combine Shaolin practice with modern fitness or other martial arts?

Yes. Many students blend Shaolin with strength training, running, boxing, or other styles. Shaolin improves coordination, flexibility, and mental focus, which supports almost any athletic or martial discipline.
